Jorden husker i gener / The Earth Remembers Through Genes, 2025-2026

150x200 cm. Jacquard loom.

Jorden husker i gener / The Earth Remembers Through Genes (Jacquard-vev 1) was developed in collaboration with OpenAI's language model ChatGPT. In 2025, through a text-based prompt, I explored how artificial intelligence might visualize a possible technological singularity, a hypothetical point at which artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence. Artificial intelligence generated several visual proposals based on the prompt. I selected one of these images, which was subsequently translated into a Jacquard weave. The work establishes a chain of translations between text, algorithm, image, and material.

The Jacquard loom is regarded as one of the first programmable machines, controlled by punched cards, an early form of code. The work therefore establishes a connection between early mechanical programming and today's generative AI systems.

The work forms part of the installation Jorden husker i gener(2024–), which explores how technology, landscape, and materiality shape human judgement, authenticity, and experience. The weave was produced in collaboration with Innvik AS.
